In our last episode, we spoke about how a new unknown video app named Zynn was giving TikTok the business after going number one in the App Store and getting into the top 10 free apps in the Google Playstore. Zynn, a video-based app, is an app of Chinese origin that allows users to consume and watch video content and pay them as they do it.
It’s been a big hit mainly because the unique selling point of the app is, you make money watching videos and like Boostpal in Ghana some time ago, it is making headway, causing TikTok all sorts of headaches. Today we are looking at the second factor which is proving to be a thorn in the flesh of TikTok creators; racist videos and black content creators.
TikTok may be on its way to plummeting completely simply because in recent weeks there have been multiple reports of the app taking down the content of black creators. What that means is, the videos that have been created from people who are black have been increasingly disappearing from the app and it has been noticed. What started as a glitch for some people has found a following as users spoke on it and realized it wasn’t a coincidence.
To add salt to injury, what they realized in the wake of this is that, for the numerous racist videos that have appeared on the app in response to challenges and trends, which have gone viral and caused issues online, especially on twitter where the world congregates and addresses issues, have been kept on the app and not been pulled down.
This is not new to TikTok. In 2018, reports were made that it is a platform that has a racist problem and it needed to sort it out. Now in this timeline, it is a problem for a lot more reasons than just it not making sense. It is a problem because of the recent riots and demonstrations because of the death of George Floyd at the hand of a white police officer.
Tensions are already high because of the death of the black man and anything that is even remotely close to racism or oppression is looked at with rapt attention and brought online for the world to see.
Because people realized this was happening on the app, what they decided to do was to start deleting accounts and deleting the append rating it at 1 star on the various app stores.
That’s simple, isn’t it? Accounts are being deleted, hence the app itself will start being deleted. The ratings are getting worse and an ap with numerous bad reviews won’t do well in the various online app stores. The grim end is people leave the app altogether as most creators don’t patronize it anymore and then it becomes another redundant app that will get deleted.
We don’t know what TikTok is putting together to rectify it, but in the wake of a death of a black person, they’d want to speed up getting their stuff right or it could proverbially end in tears for them. And the story of TikTok will be an example used in years to come, what racism can do, even, on apps.
