There are many apps on our laptops and mobile phones, but the greatest app is the mind. The airplanes we see, the trains that move around, the cars that we ride, and the numerous inventions that have ever served mankind and still do owe their gratitude to the mind. It is the greatest gift to be given to us, and yet how little do we use it.
RED FLAGS
There are so many red flags that prevent us from fully utilizing our minds to move forward and help the society in which we live. All the injustices that exist, misconceptions that hold sway in the lives of people, and unreasonable traditions that bind people to duties they barely understand are due to the non-use of the mind. Below are a few of such flags.
JUST OBEY
Ever heard such a phrase? Yeah, they do exist. Such a phrase is one of the biggest threats that try to dampen our thinking and put our minds and brains to a hurtful sleep. People who are in higher positions or are older, normally make such demands of those who are young or are their subordinates. In effect, they are telling them: Don’t apply your mind or use it. Just do what I say.
Nodding and doing when one’s faculty is asleep is the greatest damage one can do himself as an intellectual and a thinking person. When one cannot appeal to reason when asking you to do something, it is not necessary to do it.
IT’S TRADITION
Ever heard this one too? I have. Tradition is never right for the reason of its being tradition. What has been done before and is in existence does not mean it is right. Yet how many follow blindly tradition with their lips closed and their minds put to sleep. Questions should not be asked, just follow, is the popular defense given. We must be careful about this.
IN CONCLUSION
Let us think critically about whatever we do and do it because it makes sense and appeals to reason. Let us not blindfold ourselves, follow one’s command sheepishly, or do something just because it is tradition. Our mind was made for greater things, not to be confined by such mere trifles.
Good one
