Would I want to see actors from old franchises come together one last time to remake the franchises they became legendary for? It’s a tough question to answer.
As much as the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and FRIENDS brought so much happiness and joy to some of us, it’s potentially problematic hearing that they are getting together to have a reunion special.
It brings tears to my eyes knowing that we’ll be able to experience all these characters again but now in their older years. But will it work out?
The Fresh Prince franchise reunion special would never be the same after James Avery, the actor who played Uncle Phil, passed away some years ago. Because then who will play Uncle Phil?
It poses an interesting problem that could be solved. When Chadwick Boseman passed away last year, the world settled on the idea that there shouldn’t be a recasting for the major character, the Black Panther.
So maybe the Fresh Prince franchise could go in that direction. Or they can decide to flip it and incorporate the death of the actor into the script itself. That creates an emotional connection that would hit not only the actors and actresses but us viewers familiar with Uncle Phil.
The latter scenario requires a lot to execute and would be difficult since they would try to preserve his memory but use it as an avenue for good. Of course, there’s a lot that goes into that.
FRIENDS, however, doesn’t have any problem like that. All the characters are intact, although some have advanced in age.
The franchise is going to have superstar guest actors like David Beckham and BTS on board to continue the trail they left in the old franchise which saw guest stars such as Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis. Everything is set and ready.
But the bigger worry is, will it work out? Will it end in such a way that we still appreciate what these franchises did for us in our younger years and appreciate what they give us as grownups.
The reunion idea brings a lot of concepts to mind. What if the Big Bang Theory did the same? Or How I met Your Mother?
The possibilities are endless and it makes it a hallmark achievement to have your franchise go full circle and come back to make a reunion special.
We live to see.
