For most of our lives, with award shows, the peak we look towards is the BETs on the global scene. However, on the local scene, the VGMAs have reigned supreme, whether we liked it. However, recent years filled with drama, sub-par live performances, and ultimately, questionable awards have led to a fall of a once-respected awards scheme.
Bringing to mind the altercation that happened with Shatta Wale & Stonebwoy, after Shatta was brought back into the fold for the awards, we’ve seen it all.
VGMAs mostly had no reason to improve whatever they had because a lack of competition meant that whatever the case would be, no other award scheme would rise to be as gigantic as them and do a better job than they were doing. Enter 3 Music Awards.
The 3 Music Award, an award ceremony that had its maiden edition in 2018, was treated as a ceremonial award scheme in its initial stages. But in 2021, people are looking forward to the award show because of the categories of awards it has introduced and how it goes about its nominations says it all.
Established by the 3music Network, it is going to lengths to become a force to reckon with. 3 Music Awards is doing something that fans and listeners of Ghanaian music have been crying out for the longest time; they are introducing competition in the categories by picking the best and relevant as opposed to the hottest and the traditional.
3 Music isn’t looking at names, it is looking at talent, craft, and hard work. It is appreciating efforts and passion going into music by any artist and not considering who the artist and their fan base are. That is a breath of relief for some of us who have practically got sick of the VGMAs since the early 2010s.
The categories that will undoubtedly have people reeling from our perspective are; EP of the Year, Viral song of the Year, Breakthrough Act of the Year, Best Alternative Song, and of course, Album of the Year.
Simply put, these categories have the keenest competition. You just can’t call it just by looking at the category.
In the next issue, we’ll delve into some of these categories and the potential fan favorites to go head to head.
