Reports from Ming-Chi Kuo suggests there is a new keyboard being developed for Apple’s new and upcoming MacBook. According to generally accurate analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is planning to reintroduce scissor-switch to more laptops soon with new MacBook Pro and MacBook Air coming in the second quarter of 2020.
This is something Apple users have been waiting for a really long time. For the past four years we have been dealing with junky keyboard from Apple on their MacBook lineup and to hear this was a big news. What this keyboard is it’s a shift back to the original style of keyboard switch. In 2015 they introduced their new switch, The Butterfly Mechanism and we’ve seen it pan out over the past few years. It is not a particularly reliable design but this new rumoured switch uses that traditional scissor mechanism. So the way this thing works is that it uses two pieces that interlock to make this scissor like mechanism but what makes Apple’s very special or unique is the material they are using to develop this.
Instead of using like traditional regular plastic, they are supposedly using a glass fiber material. Now, they’ve used this material before. When they originally announced the butterfly mechanism in 2015, you can see that they have used glass reinforced plastics before and the reason why they use this stuff is for strength. They are able to make these components thinner and smaller while retaining strength. So these new scissor switches should be able to be a lot thinner than your traditional scissors whilst also being durable.
When Apple switched over to the butterfly switches originally in 2015 and 2016, the main reason why they did it was not just to be different but to make their laptops a little thinner.
As you know, this is only a rumour and Ming-Chi Kuo is pretty accurate on these matters so keep your fingers crossed.
