2nd Half of 2021: What to Expect from Ghana’s Music Scene

Must Read

An avid creative whose word plays so much that words say I play too much; a Ki'shon flow. Life is a journey and we're all full of stories.

In a few days, we’d be entering June 2021, which would signify the ending of the first half of the year and the commencement of the second when July comes through. For a year coming in the aftermath of the 2020 pandemic year, 2021 has wasted no time in getting a move on. There’s been significant activity in the music industry locally.

It’s not been without the usual drama, as there were feuds here and there with artists and celebrities. The Grammys this year provoked a lot of sentiment on the craftsmanship of Ghanaian music because Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Tiwa Savage all took Grammys.

It prompted the conversation about whether Ghanaian music was moving in the right direction or achieving the greatness which is attributed to it.

We had Ghana Nigerian collaborations in Gyakie & Omah Lay, Twitch 4EVA & Oxlade, Kwesi Arthur & JOEBOY and the list goes on. So the question is, in the next half of the year, what can we expect?

Sarkodie – No Pressure Album

King Sark, following his usual 2-year process, will drop another album. This would follow his Black Love album that dropped in December 2019. He’s already dropped No Fugazy as a lead single.

A lot is expected from Sarkodie so it makes sense that although he has made as little noise since the single release, there are still eyes on the ground looking to scoop any extra details on the album.

M.anifest – Madina to the World Album

Soon after Sarkodie announced his album, tweets from M.anifest’s official account showed that he is also in album mode with the album bearing the title Madina to the World. He’s already dropped Confusion with an animated music video to go alongside it, but whether it’s going to be on the album is yet to be seen.

Black Sherif – Debut Project

Sherif has shown that he’s here for the long haul in the industry. He officially exposed himself to the world when he dropped the 1st Sermon freestyle as a piece in the lead-up to his debut project release.

Not much has been said about the project itself, but the Money hitmaker is because of a project after releasing stream-racking records over the past year and early this year.

With the 1st Sermon freestyle also displaying his rap ability, the project looks a bit more interesting as we wait to see what style Sherif adopts with it.

Kwesi Arthur – New Project

His most recent release was Winning featuring Vic Mensa. Before that, he was featured on JOEBOY’s Door. Kwesi has been quiet after dropping This is Not the Tape II.

But we all know when he drops that mini-project, it means he’s working on something huge but wants to give the fans something in the interim. From the feature with Vic Mensa, it’s a fair assessment to say that Kwesi is going for the big leagues for his next project. Kwesi rarely drops terrible music or projects so that’s an exciting thing.

Darkovibes – New Music

With La Meme breaking apart and all the drama that has occurred in the past 2 years, Darkovibes is due to some new music. He’s been off his socials for mostly but recently started tweeting about how he’s felt working on music.

That for music listeners is a good sign, however, whether we get a new project or just a few singles here and there remains yet to be seen. Darkovibes’ last work came on The Cornerstone EP, which had a few decent tracks but was still experimental.
